Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a shepherd boy. His life was pure, simple, and honest. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day upon day, guarding his charges imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plan.
Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One check here morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
